Abstract:Through analyzing Sethe's infanticide and its consequences, this paper tries to shed light on it from the perspective of postmodern ethics, revealing the aporetic structure working in it at the same time. This is what Derrida calls the immunity and auto-immunity logic, that is,in order to protect itself, the community often turns against itself at the same time. This paper goes on to show that this structure exists in all levels of the communities. The American society before the Civil War,the black community,Seths's relationship with her children, and even the anti-terrorist activities are also following this logic. In conclusion, the paper points out that literature is a helpful and indispensable way to understand the mechanisms that govern our present-day world.
