Abstract:The \[?\]-epenthesis and \[u\]-elision are phonetic sequences composed of two components whose pronunciation positions are far apart. The language community will make various adjustments to this sequence for the convenience of liaison. The \[?\]-epenthesis and \[u\]-elision in Chinese dialects related to this sequence reflect the adjustment strategy of the Chinese language. By referring to SPE and the feature geometry approach, this study shows that there exist not solely opposition but also unity in the epenthesis and elision. They are the variants of the same rule and agent. Compared with Chinese, the performance of this sequence in Indo-European languages such as English and Dutch reflects the cross-language commonality of the rules of epenthesis and elision, and also the differences in syllable structure of different languages.
