Abstract:Based on MODIS data with 1 km spatial resolution, the NDVI time series and correlation between NDVI and meteorological factors, land use types and altitude, respectively, were analyzed to study characteristics of vegetation coverage in time and space of Hubei Province from 2007 to 2016. The results show that the annual NDVI increased slowly with fluctuation, and the seasonal NDVI increased most in winter. The monthly variation of NDVI was the single peak type. The highest value appeared in July as 0.758. The lowest value appeared in January as 0.383. In the spatial distribution, NDVI in the western part of Hubei Province was higher than which in the eastern region, and the vegetation coverage was high in Shiyan, Enshi and Shennongjia forest areas, while the vegetation coverage in Wuhan and Ezhou was low. There was a high correlation between NDVI and precipitation, altitude and land use type. The impact of precipitation on the growth of vegetation has lagged. Large area of forest was in high altitude mountains, where NDVI was high. The expansion of urban land and agricultural cultivation on low hills and plains was also an important reason for the low NDVI.
