Abstract:The characteristic protection villages (CPVs) are the basic types of rural revitalization and one of the important carriers of cultural inheritance. Based on the CPVs data from 2009 to 2020, this paper analyzes the spatial evolution of CPVs by employing the methods of nearest neighbor analysis, standard deviation ellipse, kernel density analysis and network-dimensional analysis in Hubei Province from the perspective of spatial distribution types, distribution direction, distribution density and distribution equilibrium. At the same time, the geodetector model is used to analyze the influence mechanism of CPVs in Hubei Province. The main results show that: 1) In terms of spatial distribution type, the spatial distribution of CPVs is an agglomeration structure type, which shows an increasing agglomeration trend of evolution characteristics in Hubei Province. Among these villages, the traditional ones have the highest degree of agglomeration. 2) In terms of spatial distribution direction, the CPVs show the pattern of “east (slightly south) - west (slightly north)” with strong centripetal force and obvious directionality in Hubei Province, and they also show a trend of gradual diffusion to east and west. 3) In terms of spatial distribution density, the high-density areas of CPVs in Hubei Province present an evolution trend from scattered independent structure to massive cluster structure, and generally present a horizontal “V-shape” kernel density structure. Yichang is always the region with the highest kernel density, and the high-density areas of different types of CPVs have significant differences. 4) In terms of spatial distribution equilibrium, the CPVs are distributed in an unequal probability in Hubei Province with agglomerations in Yichang, Jingzhou, Shiyan, Xiangyang and Enshi, but a gradually balanced development trend. 5) Natural environment is the background and cornerstone of the site selection and layout of CPVs in Hubei Province. The influences of resource endowment, social-economic and policy environment on the spatial distribution of CPVs are increasing gradually, and there are significant differences between different types of CPVs affected by various factors.
