Abstract:γ-ray and electron beam are high-energy radiation sources. High-energy radiation is able to not only process the surface of the workpiece, but also penetrate into the interior. The process control is simple, and it's capable to be carried out at room temperature or low temperature. It has the characteristics of energy saving and no environmental pollution. In this paper, the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) fibers were irradiated by γ-ray and electron beam (EB) respectively. The different radiation effects were studied by means of electron spin-paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (ESR), infrared spectrometer (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction spectrum (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), gel content and tensile test. The aim of the study was to improve the surface inertness of the fiber and explore the suitable application scope of two radiation sources to modify the material, so as to make better use of the radiation. The technology provides a theoretical basis for the surface modification of UHMWPE fibers.
