Abstract:In the 1930s, Shousheng, a pioneer of Guizhou’s new literature, left Guizhou and settled in Beijing. He wrote about the border areas with the sharp style of social analysis, exposing the various realities of the rural society with the vision of a politician. His novels are ukiyo-e of the barbaric border areas. Shousheng’s regional novels are characterized with documentary reportage, miscellaneous political thesis, and biting satire, revealing the brutality and bloodshed of “cannibalism of the rural region” in the border areas under the scourges of government, military disaster, banditry, and smoke and poison, and illuminating the national inferiority that suffocates the “people of the rural region”, thus expanding a new space for modern local literature. Shousheng is one of the most important writers in modern Chinese regional literature of border areas. Shousheng is a pathfinder of modern frontier regional literature in China. Shousheng along with Jian Xianai, who also resided in Beijing and wrote about the region, constitutes the Gemini constellation of Guizhou’s new literature.
