| Challenges and Policy Decision Facing China''''s Teachers'''' Colleges of Higher Learning at the End of the 20th Century |

Abstract At the end of this century, our teachers colleges are facing various challenges, the main ones of which are the shock from the socialist market economy to our teacher training system based on traditional planned economy, the increasing requirements of intellectual economy for qualified teaching staff, the urgent demands made by the development of our elementary education on raising the academic level and specialty quality of our teachers, the permission of China's famous universities to run teachers colleges by the state; the increasing distance caused by the state's increasing investment in the state key universities. All these challenges will make a decisive, fundamental and all-round impact on the future of China's teachers colleges, which should pay much more attention to forming China's new teachers training system by renewing their educational concepts, establishing open system of running schools and developing course syllabus and teaching modes with their own characteristics.
