Abstract Du Ya quan was one of the representative figures of the Oriental Culture School in the May Fourth Movement era. His ideas once produced a greater influence. He advanced the Kinetic static cultural theory concerning the comparision of the eastern and the western cultures. On the subject of the construction of the new culture, he preferred a compromise between the new and the old and the combination of Chinese inherent civilization with the western material civilization. This point of view is reasonable but conservative. The cultural debate between Du Ya quan and Chen Du xiu started the debate on the eastern and the western cultures, which has profound historic significance in the history of thought in modern China.
