| Rethinking on the Nature and Role of Historical Criticism |

Abstract Based on the characteristics reflected by the subjects, aim and process of historical criticism, this paper expounds that the key to historical criticism lies in investigations of the historians' thoughts. It holds that historical criticism has the characteristics of subjectivism and modernism. As the prerequisite of the development of historical theory, historical criticism is the intermediary that links history and society and pushes forward the innovation and development of historical studies.
