| Political Roles of the Homeric Agora |

Abstract Kings, the council and the assembly formed the backbone of the Homeric political system. Much attention was paid to the roles of the assembly in the discussion of the characters of the Homeric political system. This paper, based on the materials of the Epics, probes into the roles of the Homeric assembly to demonstrate that the assembly played important roles in political affairs since all the important questions concerning the communities were handed to the assembly. But it was still quite different from that of the classical polis because the latter lacked periodic meetings and voting system and never made resolutions. Only kings and aristocrats made speeches in the assembly. Therefore, under most circumstances, the assembly was a passive viewer of the affairs.
