Abstract From the discussion of the content, goal and method of the teaching of modern Chinese, the paper points out that it is necessary to have a syllabus of four independent components. The teaching content should include the common core, regional dialects and newly studied rules. The goal of teaching should be to help the students to get a good command of the basic knowledge of modern Chinese, to improve their linguistic competence and to obtain the ability of using and analyzing modern Chinese. The heuristic method of teaching should be used to replace the traditional method.
