Abstract The essay is a survey of Altiero Spinelli's Euro federalism, his critical reflections on the national sovereignty in modern European history and his efforts in 1940's and 1950's for the European Federation according to the constitutional approach he favoured. It also analyses why he couldn't realize his ideal in that period and evaluates the influence of his thought and efforts on the process of European integration and their lessons for us today.
