Abstract This paper illustrates four aesthetic charactersist ic s in Japanese poetry of Waka: 1)Focusing on romantic love with anon-political a nd non-social tendency;2)Stressing on momentary impression and experience;3) Employing brief form pregnant with deep meaning;4)Questing for aesthetic spirit s of Buddhism. It also analyzes the cultural background to form these aesthetic charactersistics.
