Abstract The unity of modern Germany was the result that was comprehensively affected by the political, economic and cultural elements, and had three development phases: the period of cultural identification of nationalism; the period of the economic integration with the building of the Zollverein and industrialization; and the era of political unity under the leadership of Prussia since the middle of 19th century. And these three development phases laid down the ideological, economic and political foundation for the unity of modern Germany.
