Abstract This article is a reflection on the contrastive studies between English and Chinese in China. It begins with the discussion of the distinction between Contrastive Linguistics and Comparative Linguistics, then continues with the retrospection and evaluation of the past hundred-year contrastive studies between English and Chinese, followed by a detailed discussion of the significance and the potential use of the results of contrastive studies; and finally elaborates on the theories and methodology in the field.
