Abstract Yu Jiaju made great contributions in history of Chinese education and his educational expositions on record consisted of millions of characters covering an extremely widerange.In the respect of defending educational sovereignty which promoted modern China to take over Christian schools set up in China,and in the respect of opening up the educational territory,he was the first to appeal for attaching importance to the countryside education,which helped to bring about the formation of the modern countryside educational thought and the rise of the countryside education movement.In the respect of educational development,he paid much attention to compulsory education,and overall elaborated how to make education really popularized in a poor and backward China pedominated by agriculture.
