Abstract The type of discourse has an obvious effect on the use of complex sentences. This paper discusses the rules of complex sentences in the foreground of narrative and argumentative discourse. The coherent complex sentence has the advantage of quantity in narrative discourse foreground. The adversativity, causality and hypothesis complex sentences have the advantage of quantity in argumentative discourse foreground. In narrative discourse foreground, the complex sentences are high-transitive, and those in argumentative discourse foreground are low-transitive. They are opposite in transitivity.
