Abstract In terms of the objective conditions， the elderly are susceptible to loneliness. With the changes of physiological conditions， demographic structures， family models， living styles and communication concepts， the elderly have some practical problems， such as the decline of cognitive ability， the marginalization of their roles in family， the generation gap， the shrinkage of their social networks and the fracture of their social communication， all of which lead to the loneliness of the elderly in the digital age. With the help of digital technology， it is possible to build a hierarchical system to relieve the loneliness of the elderly based on resource compensation， social support and self-reinforcement， so as to improve the senior citizens’ lack of digital literacy，promote their differential social embedness，realize their participation in the social reproduction of digital equality， help the smart eldercare in the digital era， and effectively raise the civilization and progress of the society.
