Abstract：This article reviews the highlights in the study on algal virus in the last 40 years. In the early stage of the research history, most of the studies focused on the isolation and analysis of characteristics of algal viruses. After a long pause in 80's of the last century, this field became more and more active in last decade since the important role of cyanophage in marine ecosystem was discovered in 90's. In China the study of algal virus has just started. As the widespread eutrophication and frequent occurrence of HAB (Harmful Algal Bloom) in China, it is expected that the study of algal virus will attract more and more attention in our country in the near future.
