Abstract:The magneto-optical effects of Nd~(3+) ions in Nd-substituted yttrium iron garnet are analyzed by using quantum theory. The calculation of Faraday rotation in the temperature range 50-300 K are presented. The calculation of the photon energy dependence of Faraday rotation at 300 K is presented as well. The results show that the magneto-optical effect of Nd~(3+) ions in Nd:YIG originates mainly from the intra-ionic electric dipole transitions between the 4f~3 and 4f~25d states split by the spin-orbit, crystal field, and superexchange interactions. The observed Faraday rotation is of the paramagnetic type. The calculated results are in good agreement with experiments.
