Innovation factor agglomeration drives the development of new quality productivity: theoretical mechanisms and empirical tests

Abstract:Based on the panel data of 283 cities in China from 2012 to 2022, the panel regression model and mediation effect model are used to empirically test the effect and mechanism of innovation factor agglomeration on the development of new quality productivity. The empirical results show that innovation factor agglomeration has a significant positive impact on the development of new quality productivity, and industrial structure upgrading as well as technological progress play a mediating role in the impact of innovation factor agglomeration on the development of new quality productivity. The test of geographic heterogeneity finds that innovation factor agglomeration significantly promotes the development of new productivity in the eastern region and central region, and the driving effect is stronger in the central region, but not in the western region. The cities in the southeast side of the Hu Huanyong line promote significantly but not in the northwest side. The test of heterogeneity in the level of innovation factor agglomeration reveals that cities with high levels of agglomeration have a significant promotion effect while cities with low levels of agglomeration have a non-significant promotion effect. Accordingly, the study proposes policy recommendations to promote the development of regional new quality productivity in terms of promoting the efficient agglomeration of innovation factors and strengthening the technological and structural effects of innovation factor agglomeration, and its conclusions are of great theoretical and practical significance for exploring the path of China's new quality productivity development.
