Land use pattern evolution and ecological quality assessment in the Futou Lake Basin from 1986 to 2024

Abstract:Based on Landsat surface reflectance imagery from 1986 to 2024, a land use dataset was constructed using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RESI) and the Eutrophication Index (FUI) were employed to comprehensively assess the ecological quality evolution of terrestrial and aquatic environments in the Futou Lake Basin. The results indicate that the urban built-up area expanded from 9.2 km2 to 106.6 km2, representing a 1 064% increase, undergoing three distinct growth phases: slow (1986-2000), accelerated (2000-2010), and rapid expansion (2010-2024). Forested areas increased by 196.62 km2 (+31%), becoming the dominant land cover type in terms of both area and ecological quality. In contrast, farmland and water bodies decreased by 163.17 km2 (-21%) and 131.61 km2 (-45%), respectively. Terrestrial ecological quality exhibits a spatial pattern of “better in the south, poorer in the north,” with high-quality forests concentrated in the southern Mufu Mountain area and relatively lower-quality conditions in the central urban zone. The eutrophic state of water bodies intensified significantly between 2000 and 2015, with large areas shifting from mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions. However, from 2015 to 2024, a general reversion to mesotrophic levels was observed. These findings provide scientific support for the optimized allocation of land resources, delineation of priority areas for ecological restoration, and implementation of water quality improvement projects within the basin, offering valuable insights for regional ecological security and sustainable development.
