The influence of China’s high-quality tourism development on common prosperity and the threshold effect of digital economy

Abstract：Achieving common prosperity is an essential requirement of Chinese-style modernization， and high-quality tourism development and the digital economy are of great significance to achieving common prosperity. This paper analyzes the mechanism of the influence of high-quality tourism development on common prosperity. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China （excluding Hong Kong， Macao and Taiwan） from 2013 to 2022， the paper constructs the benchmark regression model and threshold effect model to empirically examine the impact of high-quality tourism development on common prosperity， while exploring the threshold effect of the digital economy. The results were shown as follows. 1） High-quality tourism development can significantly and directly promote common prosperity； 2） When the digital economy is considered as the threshold variable of the threshold effect model， the relationship between high-quality tourism development and common prosperity exhibits a single threshold effect. Moreover， the analysis demonstrates a nonlinear feature of increasing marginal effect， whereby a higher level of digital economy yields a more significant promotion effect on common prosperity compared to a lower level. 3） In the further analysis of regional heterogeneity， the promotion effect of high-quality tourism development on common prosperity is more pronounced in the eastern region compared to the central and western regions. In addition， with the digital economy as the threshold variable， the threshold effect manifests as a single threshold in the eastern region， while the central and western regions exhibit a double threshold effect. The research results offer a broader perspective on the impact of high-quality tourism development on common prosperity， and provide an empirical reference for leveraging the role of digital economy in the new era， promoting high-quality tourism development， and enhancing common prosperity.
