Abstract:The national language was established in the New Literature Movement of the May Fourth Movement. During the May Fourth Movement, the New Literature Movement and the National Language Movement were integrated. The modern vernacular, established by the New Literature Movement, is the best language that has the qualities of modern ideas and tools, and it is different in nature from the vernacular of the late Qing Dynasty and that of the ancient Chinese. The vernacular before the May Fourth could not be regarded as the “national language”, because it did neither constitute a language system, nor meet the standard of “national language”. After the May Fourth Movement, various forces tried to reform the language, put forward various theories and carried out corresponding practices, but they do not change the national language. The root cause is that there is no new and better literary language to replace it. As a result, there has been no fundamental change in Chinese literary language in the last hundred years, and the modern Chinese has always been based on the “standard modern vernacular”.
