Abstract:Ethical literary criticism bases itself on the ethical and moral value of literature, and discusses the ethical characteristics and moral connotations of literature. As one of the few critical methods constructed by Chinese scholars since the modern times, although it was first proposed by foreign literary scholars, its origin should be traced back to Chinese cultural tradition. Chinese cultural spirit is rooted in the Confucian tradition, which is centered upon ethics. Therefore, the strong ethical characteristics are not only reflected in classical Chinese literature and criticism, but also have a profound impact on modern Chinese literary criticism represented by Liang Shiqiu. This ethical consciousness has strong and lasting vitality. The ethical spirit contained in Chinese culture nourishes ethical literary criticism. We can expand this theoretical method in breadth and depth, and then, with the attitude of cultural confidence, we can construct the theoretical discourse of ethical literary criticism that has both universal significance and Chinese characteristics. Therefore, the construction of ethical literary criticism at this moment is in special demand of our attention to its Chinese resources.
