Abstract Based on analysis of the two waves (2002 & 2011) of nation-wide sample survey datasets, this paper finds that the influential factors have different effects on different dimensions of political participation. Education level will inhibit voting participation, while promote participation in contact, communication and protest;compared to those individuals whose expenses balance receipts, those who run behind their expenses will be more active in the three types of participation other than election;negative appraisal of electoral fairness and effectiveness will inhibit electoral participation, while boost participation of other types;the perceived diversity of participation channels will promote voting participation, while inhibit protest; and the high appraisal of public service will reduce protest. Hence, the rise of education level, the expansion of income disparity and the relatively low public appraisal of current diversity of participation channels and the operation of public power are helpful for understanding the change of Chinese citizens’ political participation over the last decade. To reduce the income disparity, perfect the diverse participation channels (including electoral participation), and promote the level of public service are reasonable measures for relieving the rapid rise of protests and mass disturbances.
