Abstract The marriage legislation of the Tang Dynasty not only systematically summed up the legislative and judicial experience of the previous dynasties, but also embodied the legislative thoughts and principles of the rulers of the Tang Dynasty, which fully demonstrated the typical feature “ceremony rules first” of the Tang Dynasty. There are also obvious dualities in the marriage legislation of the Tang Dynasty, i.e., some legal provisions are authoritarian, backward and conservative, however, others have more free, advanced and open components.
