Abstract The paper first discusses the sources of the descriptions of animals at home land and abroad in the novel Xiyang Ji， and secondly analyzes the images and symbolic meanings of the various animals described in the novel. Then according to the offerings of the tributes including marine animals， lions and other precious animals in the novel，it reveals how the folk novelists represented by Luo Maodeng echoed the descriptions of Chinese traditional auspicious animals through the images of animals inside and outside the domain， and catered to the political interest of the traditional dynasty countries craving for rare animals.
