Abstract Empathy is considered one of the essential traits of a psychological counselor and one of therapeutic approaches. However，improper practice of empathy can easily lead to emotional trauma，especially under uncertain circumstances. In order to avoid negative results，several aspects should be given more attention while evoking empathy，including factual basis， accuracy， balancing truth with caution and setting proper boundaries. Moreover，the improvement of the effectiveness of empathy should be emphasized in mass communication and public opinion guidance.
