Abstract This paper examines Lu yao’s representative novel－The Ordinary World in terms of its theme of self-redemption and its correlation with many contemporary works. In particular， it studies how this novel manages to enlighten the young with its philosophical thinking of self-redemption，and how it succeeds in finding an exordinary way of searching for traditions， which establishes its status as a literary classic with unique aesthetic value in Chinese literature of the 1980s.
