Abstract A Study of Poetry is the first western poetics work translated into modern Chinese. It is characterized by insisting on modern aesthetic position and the “intrinsic study” of poetry, which has had an important influence on the theoretical criticism of poetry in China in the 1920s and 1930s. As a commonsense book of poetics with modern characteristics, A Study of Poetry suggests a new position and method for Chinese poetry in the transitional period and provides a modern poetics system different from Chinese tradition. The translation of A Study of Poetry has promoted the transformation of Chinese poetics to modern aesthetics, provided a theoretical foundation for the development and reflection of the “New Poetry” movement, and provided a theoretical reference for the transformation of Chinese poetics from traditional “Shi Hua” to modern “Poetics”.
