Abstract The foreground of argumentative discourse is argumentative structure and the background of such a discourse is non-argumentative structure. The quantity and type distribution of complex sentences is constrained by the discourse structure. On the part of “transitivity”,the common feature of complex sentences in the foreground of argumentative discourse is low-transitivity and neutrality of complex sentences in the background of such a discourse. There is a clear discourse motivation in the use of complex sentences.
