Abstract Liangyou Pictorial has its unique value as a genre of literature, which should not be ignored. Translations of foreign literature constituted an important part of Liangyou Pictorial’s contents. In addition to folklore, poems and classics,a large number of foreign movies and plays were also translated and adapted as short stories. The classical standards of good translation, such as faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, didn’t apply in such translations. Instead, they were dedicated to cater for the taste of general public. Liangyou Pictorial embraced various forms of literature and the role of image was brought into full play by using vivid illustrations to elaborate the theme. Liangyou Pictorial provided a bridge, which made foreign classics and Chinese masterpieces more accessible to the general public and,by its unique literature taste, promoted enlightenment.
