Abstract Being well-known for drinking and intemperance, with Irish pubs prevailing in the West, the Irish have their special rule of standing a round of drinks, namely, hospitality. James Joyce’s Ulysses has established a close connection between hospitality and nationalistic discourses, which is regrettably rarely discussed. While the cause of the confrontations between the citizen and Bloom in the episode “Cyclops” seems to be racialism, this essay argues that the unspoken principle of hospitality is the engine of the plot. The heteroglossia of rounds of drinks and talks in the masterpiece renders richer and more complex nationalism than the politics of the author himself.
