Abstract Wang Yanan plays an important role in the history of Chinese academic research and educational development. He has made great achievements and rich experience in scholarly research. He connected himself with the fate of country and the reality of society. He did academic research in the dark and cultivated talents among the ruins.In the course of academic research， Wang Yanan took saving and rejuvenating the country as his mission and establishing Chinese erudition as his goal. He had an open， free and persistent attitude towards study. He made great contributions to spreading Marxism and promoting the development of higher education by means of self-study， seeking truth from facts and integrating theory with practice. These scholarly spirits have important enlightenment and reference value for later scholars.
