Abstract:In the Qing Dynasty, the tax of Huai Salt occupied the highest position in the national salt tax, only part of which would be equal to the total revenue of several provinces. Its transportation and sales range covers six provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei and Henan. The transportation and sale of Huai Salt promoted the formation of the Huai Salt transportation line. This line not only has a profound impact on the economic prosperity, but also plays a significant role in promoting the development of town settlements that along the line. In this paper, the ancient map interpretation method is used to illustrate the Huai Salt transportation line in the “four provinces salt map” in the Qing Dynasty, and based on this, the point-like town settlements are connected in series. According to their different roles in Huai Salt economy, the town settlements were able to be divided into two types: ancient salt-producing towns and ancient salt-transporting towns. The impact of salt industry economy on town settlements along the line is discussed in order to provide a new perspective and basis for the protection of town settlements along the line.
