Abstract:Epidemics has always been a constant threat to human life and health. Based on the historical epidemic data, the spatiotemporal changes of the epidemics in Jiangnan area over the past millenium were explored by using the spatial analysis model. The results are shown as follows. 1)The Jiangnan area has experienced as many as 300 epidemic outbreaks, occurring almost every three years.. Epidemics have become increasingly frequent with 52% of all outbreaks occurring during the Qing Dynasty. 2) In seasonal level, epidemic outbreaks in Jiangnan area were concentrated in summer and autumn, followed by spring and less in winter. In terms of months, June and July of the lunar calendar were prone to epidemic outbreaks. 3) The epidemic disasters of Jiangnan area in the past thousand years have an obvious long-term upward trend, with two centuries of fluctuation cycles of about 400 years. 4) As a whole, the spatial distribution pattern of epidemic disasters in Jiangnan area was clustered, forming a high-frequent epidemic area centered on today's Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai. Epidemic frequency is generally higher in the north than south. The epidemic center has shifted generally from south to north and from west to east. The epidemic intensity decreased from east to northwest and southwest. 5) The prevalence pattern of epidemics in Jiangnan area is affected by the spatial pattern of human activities. The epidemics are heavier in the hinterland of the Taihu Lake and the delta front than in the mountainous and hilly areas, and heavier in the coastal areas than in the hinterland.
