Abstract:Mountains have long been considered as the periphery of civilization. However, recent archaeological discoveries and theoretical advancements suggest that mountains are not only crucial sites for human activities but also key channels for cultural exchange and technological diffusion. Based on a review of the latest research on agriculture, animal husbandry, and cultural exchange in the southwestern mountains during prehistory, this paper presents important research directions and topics for future mountain archaeology within the framework of archaeological science. The rich ecosystems and diverse cultural landscapes of the mountain regions of southwestern China exploring from an interdisciplinary perspective provide a unique perspective for understanding how humans adapted to complex environments and achieved sustainable development.
