Abstract Unlike the traditional narration of Taoism history，the New paradigm Taoism History that Kobayashi Masayoshi has established is a progressive and systematic Taoism history. The answer that Kobayashi Masayoshi gave to the question What is Taoism， which was the footstone of the New paradigm Taoism History， was oriented by clear problem consciousness and was proved from the historical perspective.There was rationality but shortcomings in the answer of the question. Defining the concept of Taoism should not only take the general property of Taoism into account，but also consider the culture soil that Taoism was rooted in.
