| A Preliminary Study on the Symbolic Year of Inheriting Smoothly Five Thousand Years of Chinese Civilization |

Abstract The time span of Chinese civilization has not yet been defined until now， therefore the expressions among scholars are distinctly different.The purpose of this paper is to make basic recognition for the time span of Chinese civilization and to speculate the symbolic year of inheriting smoothly five thousand years’ civilization. Based on archaeological exploration and research achievements in the recent 100 years，it regards the invention of the character， the emergence of the city， bronze casting， the establishment of countries and so on as signs of human civilization，thus it determines that Chinese civilization has a five-thousand-year history. The starting specific point of civilization is difficult to identify，so it chooses to use an approximate center point to mark the symbolic year of inheriting smoothly five thousand years of civilization. In the Axis Time，Confucius is a representative figure who continues with the past and opens up with the future. Meanwhile， the coming of Iron Age during the Warring States period and the earth-shaking changes in the economic and political fields make this period as the time point of historical change.So it is reasonable to use Confucius as an approximate center point of the five thousand years. Finally，it thinks that 2021 would be the symbolic year of inheriting smoothly five thousand years of civilization based on Confucius’s death time. It is of great significance for academic research and social mobilization to establish this symbolic year.
