Abstract The definition of mental illness is a fundamental topic in psychiatry and is influenced by both scientific and non-scientific factors. Based on the historical evidence of the development of psychiatry，some non-scientific factors influencing the definition of mental illness can be summarized as well as their negative influences， In addition， this paper puts forward some suggestions to deal with these non-scientific factors.
