Abstract:4-Propylbenzaldehyde (C10H12O) is an important intermediate for pharmaceutical. At present, the primary manufacturing technique is extraction from Tsaoko. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an efficient, environmentally friendly and secure production process. In this research, 4-propylbenzoic acid was utilized as the raw material, through a sequence of three procedures, which is esterification, reduction, and oxidation reaction to achieve the final product. The products were qualitatively analyzed by IR and 1H-NMR, and quantitatively analyzed by GC. The structure and purity of the standard samples and the intermediate samples were determined. In addition, we optimized the reaction parameters of the synthesis process and speculated the corresponding reaction mechanism. Following the optimized conditions, the best yield of the three-step reaction were 95.2%, 91.0% and 66.7% respectively, and the overal yield of the whole process route was 57.8%.
