Abstract:The compilation of genealogy is a cultural practice in which family elites create family relations and operate local politics in the name of history and in response to the process of national unification. This practice is complicated and diverse due to many restrictions, but it provides social foundations and theoretical sources for the synthesis of the so-called “big history” and “small history” in the current academic community. During Qing dynasty, the Ma-clan of Shuangshan village in eastern Shandong compiled its genealogy five times, showing the deep social structure of Chinese traditional culture and politics, as well as the dual role of family elites between the state and the local, by closing to the national history style and the synthetic narration of rituals, customs, laws and other discourse.
