Research on thetemporal-spatial pattern of China’s tourism development efficiency and its factors

Abstract：In the 40 years since reforming and opening， tourism industry has become one of the pillar industries of China’s economy. However， China's tourism industry has developed unevenly among different regions and inadequately. It is necessary to explore the spatial and temporal pattern of China’s tourism development efficiency and its driving factors. This paper calculated the tourism development efficiency of the 31 mainland provinces， municipalities and autonomous regions in China from 2000 to 2016 by applying the revised DEA model. The spatial patterns of tourism development efficiency both in provincial and regional scale were analyzed respectively for 2000， 2005， 2010 and 2016 by using G-index and Theil Index methods. And Tobit regression method was used to simulate the factors affecting the tourism development efficiency in China. The results show as follows. The tourism development efficiency of all the 31 mainland provinces has improved from 2000 to 2016， presenting a trend of transforming from extensive development to intensive one. The regional differences in tourism development efficiency are significant among provinces and mainly due to the internal differences in the same region， especially in eastern and western regions， whereas the differences has fluctuated and decreased during the research period. Tourism comprehensive efficiency is mainly and positively affected by the role of tourism industry， and pure technical efficiency is most affected by traffic accessibility， while scale efficiency is mainly and positively affected by regional economic development level and government attention.
