Abstract:Since the new economic normal, the regional development pattern has appeared the new characteristic of the north-south economic divergence. Based on the analysis of the situation of north-south economic divergenceand the difference pattern of regional innovation, in this paper the econometrics panel data modelis constructed with the development logic of the new normal of economy, and from the perspective of the difference of regional innovation capability. Then an empirical analysis of the causes of the economic development divergence between the north and the south is conducted. The results are shown as follows.1) Since 2013, with the rapid decline of economic growth in the north, the trend of economic divergence between the south and the north has become more and more prominent.2) The gap in innovation capability between the north and the south is equally large, and the innovation gap is gradually widening.3) The most important factor causing the north-south economic divergenceis the difference of regional innovation ability. The speed of the capital accumulation contributes greatly to the north-south economic divergence. Institutional factors can also partly explain the north-south economic growth divergence, but the labor force factor does not constitute the main reason of the north-south economic divergence. The study also found that the human capital advantages of the north moderates the intensification of the north-south economic divergenceto a certain extent. Based on the above conclusions, some policy suggestions are put forward to promote the balanced development of north-south economy in China.
