Research progress on the control of the major invasive pest of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda

Abstract:Spodoptera frugiperda(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a world's major pest of agriculture warned by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Its larvae can cause damage to many crops such as rice, sugarcane and corn, and lead to serious economic losses. Since its massive invasion of China at the end of 2018, Spodoptera frugiperda had caused great harm to the agriculture of China. In this paper, the current control methods in China and abroad were summarized and compared from five aspects: physical and chemical inducement control, chemical control, biological control and integrated pest management. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of current control methods were analyzed. It was proposed that the research on developing and screening of new biological control methods should be accelerated. The green prevention and control management system should be further established combined with the adjustment of agricultural planting pattern, which will contribute to achieve the goal of green, efficient and sustainable management of Spodoptera frugiperda and promote the sustainable development of agriculture and ecology.
