Abstract:Currently, the parent-child leisure and tourism industry is growing rapidly, with an increasing amount of research focusing parent-child recreational activities. In this paper, semi-structured interviews with 80 parents of children aged 1-7 years old were conducted and analyzed by grounded theory focusing on parent-child recreation motivation, recreation decision and recreation behavior. The motivation and behavior characteristics of parent-child recreation activities forchildren in this age group were summarized with a parent-child recreation motivation-behavior relationship model constructed. The results are as follow. 1) The primary motivation of parent-child recreation for children aged 1-7 is “play”, with the two main objectives being promoting children's growth and development as well as harmonious family development. 2) Parent-child recreation decision-making behavior has the distinctive characteristics of “parents and children make decisions together, and parents make the final decision ”. The distinctive characteristics of parent-child recreation is also manifested as parent-child companionship behavior, parent-child co-presence, but also allowing individual activities. 3) Motivation of parent-child recreational activities will affect their subsequent behavior, with different motivation leading to different forms of recreation behavior. The results would enrich research on parent-child recreational activities and provide a theoretical basis for the development of parent-child tourism and leisure industry.
