Abstract:Territorial spatial function comprehensively represents the developmental status of regional geographical elements. Scientifically assessing the balancing or synergistic relationship between the significance of conserving natural resources and the rationality of territorial spatial function development holds considerable theoretical and practical importance in the context of modernizing land governance systems and capacity-building. This study employs the Wuhan-Ezhou-Huanggang-Huangshi (WEHH) metropolitan area as an illustrative case. By examining the synergy or balance between the importance of preserving resources and environmental elements and the rationality of territorial spatial function development, the comprehensive status of territorial spatial function was scientifically analyzed from the perspective of harmonious alignment between 'nature protection' and 'resource development,' aiming at the reconstruction of a novel regional spatial development and conservation model. The results are shown as follows. 1) The overall spatial distribution pattern of resource and environmental carrying capacity in the WEHH metropolitan area is high in the eastern part and low in the central and western parts, with regions endowed with better natural resources exhibiting a more substantial capacity to accommodate various development and utilization activities. 2) The intensity of land spatial development in the WEHH metropolitan area exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity, with a moderate to low human utilization of land spatial resource elements. 3) The comprehensive index of territorial spatial function in the WEHH metropolitan area shows a spatial distribution pattern of “high in the east, low in the west, high in the south, and low in the north,” with Wuhan City having the lowest level and Huangshi City having the highest level. 4) The overall territorial spatial function in the WEHH metropolitan area exhibits a synergistic relationship. In contrast, in some areas, it shows a balancing relationship, and there are significant regional differences in the distribution of spatial function comprehensive indices. Based on the balancing/synergistic relationship between land spatial resource elements of “development” and “protection”, this study reveals the comprehensive characteristics of territorial spatial function under the combined effects of human utilization and natural conservation. It enhances the theoretical and technical framework for a comprehensive understanding of territorial spatial function and explores rational pathways for reconstructing a novel pattern of regional territorial space development and protection.
