Abstract:With the rapid development of the digital economy, the increasingly prominent digital divide has emerged as a phenomenon requiring urgent attention. A complex and dynamic interaction exists between the digital divide and the urban tourism economy. Understanding the relationship between these two factors is of critical strategic importance for ensuring the balanced and sustainable development of the tourism economy. Using panel data from 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020, this paper examines the spatiotemporal development characteristics of the digital divide and urban tourism economy, as well as the dynamic interactions between the two. Results are shown as follows. 1) Over the study period, both China's digital divide and the development of its tourism economy exhibited fluctuating growth, with distinct spatial differentiation patterns. 2) The digital divide significantly negatively impacts the urban tourism economy. In contrast, the reverse effect-urban tourism economy' s influence on reducing the digital divide-is not significant and varies across different geographic regions. 3) A unidirectional Granger causality exists between the digital divide and tourism economy, with the obstructive effect of the digital divide on the tourism economy being particularly strong in the short term, but gradually diminishing in the medium and long terms. In contrast, the urban tourism economy has limited ability to bridge the digital divide, and the interaction between the two shows an asymmetric pattern. This study not only enhances our understanding of the relationship between the digital divide and tourism economy but also offers strategic recommendations for policymakers.
