Abstract:With the rapid development of digital technology, serious games are increasingly being applied in the fields of heritage education and inheritance. The article takes the game “Cloud Tour of the Great Wall” as an example and uses grounded theory analysis to explore psychological mechanisms of empathetic engagement in cultural heritage education through digital games. The findings are threefold: Firstly, with the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of cultural heritage as the core, the serious game uses digital technology to realize the “hyperreal” 3D reconstruction of tangible cultural heritage and the “task-driven” gamification of intangible cultural heritage in virtual space; Secondly, empathy for heritage can be triggered through stimulating imagination, but also through digitally embodied practice driven by identity, allowing players to experience emotional resonance and develop a sense of mission in heritage preservation through perspective-taking; Thirdly, in the context of cultural heritage education through digital games, identity-driven elements serve both as initiating factors and as core threads that runs through the narrative and embodied practices. The “virtual identity” based on collective memory can help bridge psychological distance and foster resonance with the spiritual values of heritage. The article explores psychological mechanisms of empathetic engagement in cultural heritage education through digital games, expands the three-component theory of empathy, and provides insights for the design of scenarios and narratives in digital heritage games, as well as for the digital preservation and revitalization of heritage.
